Dangers, doubts and challenges about artificial intelligence

Understanding artificial intelligence (AI) is not an impossible challenge. Before promoting it, it is essential to foster positive public discussion. AI, famous and often misunderstood, is a revolutionary technology capable of amplifying human intellectual capabilities. It needs to be guided wisely to maximize opportunities and avoid unintended consequences. The regulation of AI, as complex as its technological development, is being carefully studied.

Similar to past industrial revolutions, AI can lead to significant improvement in the quality of life, but it is essential to anticipate and manage potential risks, as was the case with past ecological issues. The discussion of AI is influenced by the emotional and imaginary side, which can distort information. The reality of AI, based on mathematical algorithms, often remains obscure to the public, contributing to mistrust and lack of understanding.

The public has a limited view of AI, often influenced by its humanoid and chameleon-like appearance in interactions. The temptation to anthropomorphize AI is strong, but its true nature of trained algorithms and data is far from common perception. The discussion about AI, amplified by digital communication, often follows an emotional rather than rational path.

Polarization over the AI discussion is an imminent risk, fueled by distrust of the word “algorithm.” However, polarization is dangerous because it can lead to exclusion from an accelerated industrial revolution and dependence on those who develop and control AI. Polarization prevents the necessary deepening to fully understand the implications of this technology.

Politics is appropriating the AI discussion, using it to ride on fears and enthusiasms. Lacking a shared strategy at the European level, Europe is dysfunctional on this issue. An effective response requires a critical intellectual, financial and political mass that only one continent can provide. Fostering collaboration across countries and sectors, encouraging start-ups and public-private partnerships, and responsible data sharing are necessary conditions to succeed in this mission. A crucial prerequisite is the creation of a positive public culture about AI, free from misinformation and polarization.
